Three day International Academic Symposium on Enhanced Landfill Mining (ELFM) in the context of the transition to Sustainable Materials Management (SMM) and Enhanced Waste Management (EWM). This Symposium holds the additional labels of EFRO and the Belgian EU Presidency (2010).
Framework
General framework
Four Symposium Sessions (5-6/10/2010)
- ELFM: a new concept?
- Waste-to-Product and ELFM
- Waste-to-Energy and ELFM
- ELFM and transition management
Keywords
SMM, ELFM, EWM, Temporary landfills, Waste-to-Product, Waste-to-Energy, Carbon Capture and Storage, Plasma technology, Legislation, Cost-benefit analysis, Transition Management, Multi-actor, Externalities
Invited speakers
16 specialists and/or high level representatives of the key institutes in this field (academia, authorities, civil society and industry) have been invited to give a lecture on one of the topics listed above. The invited scientific lectures (35 minutes + 10 minutes for questions) cover a specific topic in a relatively detailed way. The papers of the invited speakers will be distributed to the participants at the beginning of the Symposium in an official Conference Proceedings book.
Poster session (4/10/2010 and following days)
Researchers and other actors are invited to present a poster during the first day of the Symposium and during the coffee breaks of the subsequent days. A standard poster template is to be used.
Deadlines for speakers and poster presentations
Papers need to be sent to before 20/8/2010. This is a sharp deadline in order to be able to produce the Symposium book in time. Poster titles (together with the authors' list and a short abstract) need to be delivered to , also by 20/8/2010.
ELFM Consortium
In 2008 a consortium of people with varying expertise was established in Flanders (Belgium) in order to explore potential pathways to develop an Enhanced Landfill Mining (ELFM) approach and to integrate landfilling in a more sustainable waste management practice (Enhanced Waste Management: EWM). This Consortium consists of experts from various VITO and K.U.Leuven Departments, and from UHasselt, HUB, Group Machiels, LRM, OVAM and civil society actors. The ELFM Consortium has been initiated together with Group Machiels an EU-EFRO Demonstration Project in this domain.
Participants (on invitation)
Due to practical reasons only 150 participants (including speakers and organisers) can take part in the Symposium. Apart from the speakers, researchers, government officials, civil society actors and industrial fellows are invited. Registration is performed through the on-line registration page. In order to be able to register your name needs to be on the list of invited participants. Additional names can be added to the list after motivating your potential participation.
Further details
Registration for the Symposium is free. The official opening and registration dinner (buffet) on the 4th of October will be free of charge, as will the lunches be on the three Symposium days. The conference Symposium dinner on the 5th of October will be charged, the location and specifications will be communicated in due time. There is the possibility to rent a cottage within the premises of Molenheide (Houthalen-Helchteren), where the Symposium takes place. Hotel rooms nearby can also be reserved.
